(US terms; easy/intermediate; gauge not critical)

Materials

  • Worsted‑weight cotton or acrylic in 7 colors: red, orange, yellow, green, light blue (cyan), blue, violet + green for leaves/calyx

  • Hook: 3.5–4.0 mm (use a smaller hook than the yarn label for firm petals)

  • 18–20 ga floral wire (25–30 cm) + green floral tape (optional)

  • Tapestry needle, scissors, a drop of fabric/white glue (optional)

Abbreviations (US)

ch = chain • sl st = slip stitch • sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet • dc = double crochet • tr = treble
sk = skip • BLO = back loop only • rep = repeat • st(s) = stitch(es)

Part A — Petal Strip (worked as one long strip, then rolled)

This pattern makes 28 petals divided into rainbow sections. Each petal consumes 3 chains: (sk 1, petal in next ch, sl st in next ch). Color changes happen after completing a petal.

  1. Foundation: With red, ch 84. (Work in the back bumps for a neat edge.)

  2. Petals 1–4 (RED) – small petals
[Small Petal]: sk 1 ch, in next ch work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc), sl st in next ch.
    Rep 4 times total.

  3. Petals 5–8 (ORANGE) – small/medium
Change to orange. Work Small Petal 4 times.

  4. Petals 9–12 (YELLOW) – medium petals
Change to yellow. [Medium Petal]: sk 1, in next ch (sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc), sl st in next.
    Make 4.

  5. Petals 13–16 (GREEN) – medium/large
Change to green. Work Medium Petal 4 times.

  6. Petals 17–20 (LIGHT BLUE) – large petals
Change to light blue. [Large Petal]: sk 1, in next ch (sc, hdc, 6 dc, tr, 6 dc, hdc, sc), sl st in next.
    Make 4.

  7. Petals 21–24 (BLUE) – large/XL
Change to blue. Work Large Petal 4 times.

  8. Petals 25–28 (VIOLET) – outer XL petals
Change to violet. [XL Petal]: sk 1, in next ch (sc, hdc, 7 dc, 2 tr, 7 dc, hdc, sc), sl st in next.
Make 4. Fasten off, leaving a 60–80 cm tail for sewing.

Tip: As petals get larger, the strip naturally curls—perfect for rolling. If it feels too flat, lightly steam or pinch folds into the outer petals later.

Part B — Calyx (green base + sepals)

  1. Base circle: With green, MR, 6 sc in ring.
R2: inc in each st (12).
R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18). Sl st to join.

  2. Sepals (×5): (ch 8; sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, dc, tr, tr; sl st in next st of base) x5.
Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing.

Part C — Leaves (make 2–3)

  1. Large leaf: With green, ch 9.
Row up one side of the chain: sc in 2nd ch, hdc, dc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, 3 sc in last ch.
Down the other side (work into remaining loops): hdc, dc, tr, dc, dc, hdc, sc.
    Sl st to first sc.
Optional vein: sl st in a straight line up the center to the tip; fasten off with a long tail.

  2. Small leaf (optional): ch 7; work as above, but omit the tr stitches.

Part D — Stem (two options)

A. Wire core (sturdier):

  • Wrap floral wire with tape.

  • To cover with crochet: join green to the wire near the top; ch 6, sl st to form a ring, then sc in rounds until the tube reaches your desired length, sliding it over the wire as you go.

B. No wire:

  • Crochet the same tube but stuff lightly with scrap yarn; it’ll be floppy but cute.

Assembly

  1. Roll the rose: Starting at the red end (small petals), roll the strip into a tight spiral for the bud. As you roll, take the long tail and whipstitch through the bottom edges to secure. Let the petals fan out more as you reach the violet outer edge.

  2. Attach stem: Stitch or glue the stem top to the rose base (through those bottom loops you sewed).

  3. Add the calyx: Place the green base under the rose; stitch it around the base. Let the 5 sepals point downward around the stem; tack their tips if you like.

  4. Attach leaves: Sew 1–3 leaves to the stem about 5–8 cm below the flower. If using wire, you can whipstitch leaves around short wire “branches” first, then tape/crochet them onto the main stem.

  5. Finish & shape: Weave in all ends. Pinch/fold outer petals for ruffles. For extra stiffness, brush the underside of petals lightly with a mix of 1:1 white glue + water, shape, and let dry.

Size & tweaks

  • With worsted + 3.5–4.0 mm hook, finished bloom ≈ 7–10 cm across; stem length as desired.

  • Want a fuller rose? Chain +12 (to 96) and add 4 more petals (use violet).

  • Want a tighter bud? Stop rolling after yellow/green and secure—cute boutonnière.
